When working to improve your Wide Receiver skillset, never forget about the simple things that will lead to success. Work on stances and get-offs as much as you possibly can. Keep the weight on your front foot, push off low and hard. NO FALSE STEPS! As a general rule of thumb, you should practice get offs for at least 5 minutes a day. If you can get into the 10 minute range, then you will be explosive off the line and VERY hard to cover! Perfecting get-offs can mean the difference between converting on third and long or having to punt.

Where does most of your strength come from when throwing a football? The most common answers are your arm or legs. The truth is it comes from your core region and specifically your abs. Because of this misconception young QB’s lose out on a lot of zip and distance on their ball because they do not focus on their abs enough while working out. My general rule of thumb for my QB’s is that they do 10 minutes of high intensity abs each day. Ideally you would get 15 minutes of high intensity abs. Your next question might be what ab exercises should I do? Over the years I have found that at this level it really doesn’t matter as long as you are working hard. If you can commit yourself to 10 minutes a day, you will notice a significant difference with the velocity of your football. There is 3 months before the start of football season, which means there is plenty of time to get stronger and commit yourself. Your the QB, be the leader, set the example, and get after it!

Here is a great article on QB play from one of the best coaches in the game, Bryan Harsin the offensive coordinator for the Texas Longhorns. We feel that is a must read and it falls right in line with what we believe in here at air assault.

Texas co-offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Bryan Harsin is looking at 4 components to determine the Longhorns’ starting quarterback.

Garrett Gilbert, Case McCoy, and Connor Wood are competing to lead the Longhorns.

Harsin explained, “There are four things that we talked about, and this is just quarterback play in general. One is toughness. Two is preparation. Number three is decision-making, and four is accuracy. We’ve been talking about the decision-making process while we are out there on the field, and then we have been working on the fundamentals to try to get better with our accuracy.”

“The toughness part will come when you get into the scrimmages, when you get into those game situations where those guys will stay in the pocket and move around, or they will throw the ball away when they are supposed to and that is the only play.”

Co-offensive coordinator / running backs coach Major Applewhite said, “Guys are really taking to the offensive scheme. They really like the stuff that we’re doing. But more so, they’re taking to the tempo – what we’re doing in practice and how we want to see them work. Everybody runs the zone, everybody runs the power, everybody runs four verticals, but how do you practice it?”

“The players are willing to learn new things, new ideas, new tempos and new ways to practice. Trying to understand that it’s more than just putting in new plays, we’re trying to change the culture of how we practice – the effort that we put forth and the tempo in which we practice drill-to-drill.”

Hey WRs and QBs! Spring Football is here! As you embark on the beginning of the 2011 season, here are a couple things to remember. First, if you were a Junior last year, get that out of your head. You are now a Senior, it is time to take the next step and become the leader that you know you are. If you were a Freshman last year, that is no more. You are now a Sophomore, and it is time to start the battle to try and make that Varsity squad!
Secondly, take some extra time these next couple of weeks to get familiar with your new QBs and WRs. Establish that connection that Coach Peck and I preach about every day of camp. Get out to the field early or stay late, because it is the little things that count! Looking forward to camp!

It’s that time of the year again. The Summer 2011 camp is only a couple months away. Sign ups are starting to roll in! This is a very exciting time for everybody as Spring ball is about to start and the 2011 season becomes under way. Make sure you start the season off right and commit to becoming the best football player that you are capable of becoming.
