Square Drill for QB’s Agility in the Pocket

logo

This is a very common drill that you will see at most skill camps throughout the nation. I believe it is so widely used because it is simple and incorporates all the movements you will use while working the pocket. To set up the drill you will need to put 4 cones into a square shape, with each cone being about 8 yards apart. To do the drill you will start at one cone and do a 5 step drop to the cone directly behind it. Once you get to that cone you will set up like you are in the pocket ready to throw. When you are balanced you will move to the next cone by sliding  your feet (without crossing over). Again you will set up like you are in the pocket. Once balanced you will move onto the next cone by sprinting forward. Once you reach that cone you will again set up. Lastly, you will back peddle to the cone where you originally started and you will set up once again. If you are having trouble understanding this picture it this way. You are tracing the square pattern by taking a 5 step drop, sliding, running forward, and back peddling, while remembering to set up at all 4 corners. I would utilize this drill every time you are doing your QB workout. It will only help but dramatically improve your footwork in the pocket.

Points of emphasis: head always up looking downfield, carriage of the ball is chest to chest and never drops down, be smooth in your movements, and always have a proper set up at each cone!
