The 3 Step Drop

logo

The 3 step drop is an essential part of every high school’s passing game. The more you can perfect the 3 step drop the more effective of a passer you will become. When working on a 3 step drop imagine you are in the middle of a clock. 12 is straight ahead of you and 6 is right behind you. Your first step should be a drive step, reaching for distance away from the line of scrimmage, and it should land at 6. This first step is very important, as it is the only step that is responsible for gaining depth. The second step is a crossover step, which is short and quick. The third and last step is bringing your back foot and placing it underneath your back shoulder. At this point you should be balanced with your feet right underneath your shoulders and you should be able to throw to any part of the field. At the end of your 3 step drop you should be 4-5 yds deep from the LOS. This may seem like a simple and easy skill but its importance can not be undermined. As a high school QB it is important to strive for the best 3 step drop as possible as it will really make a difference in your abilities as a passer.
